|Winslow & Ellsworth, a
custom-design and wholesale millinery debuted in New York in 2002 and
relocated to Lexington, Ky in 2006. Operated by milliner and
owner Blythe Savage, the company specializes in custom-designed pieces
through individual consultations or commissions by designer retailers.
Originally known as Hats of Character, an Atlanta-based line
established in 1995, the collection has evolved from a whimsical,
Southern direction that catered primarily to mothers-of-the-bride and
church goers to an edgy, cosmopolitan take on hat trends and classics.
“As I’ve matured as a milliner, I’ve learned which hats people really
need in their everyday lives, especially in an urban environment” says
The collection features fedoras in various fur felts including
beaver, suede or wool, as well as newsboy caps and berets. These
styles make the most sense for city living according to Savage. “A
fedora complements a smart suit or trench, and unstructured hats are
easy to stash in a bag and go,” she says.
If clients have something more ornate or unique in mind, Savage
offers private appointments online or in person at her design studio.
The process generally involves an interview with each client who also
tries on different styles before selecting colors and trim.
Aside from custom orders, hats are available at Jeffrey in New
York. Savage’s work has been featured in “GQ” and in the Staten Island
Institute of Arts and Sciences’ permanent collection. She also
participates in charity events and organizations including Fashion
Cares and Smile Train.
